A practical MTN and Airtel eSIM guide covering EID checks, service-centre activation, QR-code safety and moving a line to another phone.
An eSIM performs the role of a removable SIM through a profile stored on a compatible phone. It can be convenient for a dual-line setup, but activation is still a SIM-registration or SIM-swap process controlled by the mobile network. A QR code from an unknown seller is not a shortcut to a registered Nigerian line.
Before visiting a service centre, confirm that the phone displays an EID, keep the registered owner’s identity documents ready and decide whether the existing physical SIM will be replaced. MTN and Airtel publish different instructions for reusing or moving profiles, so follow the rule shown by the network serving the line.
Check the phone before requesting an eSIM
Dial *#06# from the device. An eSIM-capable model should display an EID in addition to identifiers such as the IMEI. An EID and IMEI are not the same thing: the EID identifies the embedded SIM component, while the IMEI identifies the mobile device.
- Confirm that the exact regional model supports eSIM; two phones with similar names may differ.
- Install current system updates and connect to trusted Wi-Fi for profile download.
- Back up important contacts and messages before replacing an active SIM.
- Do not publish the EID, QR code, SIM serial or PUK in a forum or support comment.
What happens at activation
Airtel directs customers to an Airtel Service Centre, where an agent completes the SIM change and supplies the QR profile. MTN also explains that the customer downloads the profile by scanning the QR code provided by customer care. The registered owner may need to complete the network’s current identity checks.
On iPhone, the relevant option is normally under Cellular or Mobile Data. Compatible Samsung phones use SIM Card Manager, while Pixel phones use the mobile-network settings. Menu wording changes by operating-system version, so use the handset instructions displayed after the network has completed the account-side change.
Treat the QR profile like a sensitive credential
Do not scan a QR code received through an unsolicited message. It can direct the device toward an account or profile you did not request. Keep the official slip private and ask the network what to do if it is lost. Airtel states that its QR code is single-use and requires a new SIM swap to move the line; MTN describes reuse differently after a profile has been dissociated. That difference is why a generic transfer tutorial should not override the current provider instruction.
Moving to another phone
First confirm that the new phone has an EID. Do not erase the working profile until you understand the provider’s transfer procedure and have access to official support. Connect the new phone to trusted Wi-Fi, follow the provider-approved swap or profile process and test calls, SMS, mobile data and important banking alerts afterward.
If the eSIM phone is lost
Contact the network immediately through an independently verified route. Airtel directs customers to call 300 or visit a showroom to block the line and perform another SIM swap after identity verification. Also protect email, banking and wallet accounts that use the number for alerts or recovery.
Physical SIM and eSIM are access formats, not different accounts
Changing the SIM format does not create a second ownership record or automatically move the number to a different customer. The network associates the new profile with the registered line during the swap. Ask when the old physical SIM will stop working and never leave it with an unofficial installer.
After activation, label each line clearly on a dual-SIM phone, select the intended default for calls, data and SMS, and test an ordinary call and message. Confirm that important bank or wallet alerts still reach the expected number before attempting an urgent payment.
